Richmond San Rafael Bridge – Richmond, CA

Strand Jacking Procedure
Project: Richmond San Rafael Bridge, San Francisco, CA
Client: Tutor-Saliba/Koch/Tidewater

Zieman Engineering designed the erection procedures and equipment to install eccentrically braced frames
(painted gray in the photos) to existing towers for seismic retrofit at 34 locations. The frames and lifting components
weighed up to 190,000 pound and were up to 116 feet long and were delivered horizontally on a barge, tilted to
vertical and jacked into position. The system (painted red in the photos) consisted of a lifting truss, strand jacks,
pivot cart, rollers, rails and holdback on the barge.
